When You Keep Looking for Peace in All the Wrong Places

We’re always looking for something.

The right person. The next opportunity. More money. A better job. A different season. A little more recognition. Maybe just one week where everything finally settles down.

And underneath all that looking, sometimes what we’re really searching for is much simpler: peace.

The problem is, we’re pretty good at convincing ourselves that peace is waiting on the other side of something.

When this situation changes, I’ll be okay.

When I meet the right person, I’ll feel whole.

When I make enough money, I’ll finally breathe.

When I get the answer I’ve been praying for, then I’ll have peace.

So we keep looking. To a person. To the next thing. Sometimes anywhere but to Grace.

And for a while, some of those things may even work. They can make life better. They can bring happiness, relief, comfort or security. There’s nothing wrong with that.

But peace that depends on everything going right has a way of disappearing the moment something goes wrong.

Maybe real peace isn’t the absence of problems. Maybe it’s being steady even when life isn’t.

Jesus talked about that kind of peace. Not the kind the world gives. Not a peace that rises and falls with our circumstances, but one that can remain even when life doesn’t make sense.

In John 14:27, Jesus tells His followers, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” (NIV)

That doesn’t mean faith makes everything easy. It doesn’t mean disappointment stops hurting, bills stop coming, relationships stop being complicated or prayers always get answered the way we hoped.

It means our peace no longer has to depend on any of those things.

So maybe the goal isn’t to stop looking. We’re human. We’ll always want things, hope for things and reach for things.

The problem may not be what we’re looking for, but what we expect to find when we get it.

A person can love you deeply and still disappoint you. A thing can make life easier and still not satisfy you. A circumstance can change for the better and change again tomorrow.

But the peace Jesus offers doesn’t have to change when everything else does.

So keep hoping. Keep dreaming. Keep praying for things to change.

Just don’t ask a person, a circumstance or the next thing to give you what only God can.
